Hawaii Bridge Center
March, 2009
Aloha:
In its Articles of Incorporation, the purpose of the Hawaii Bridge Center (HBC) is stated as follows: `The Corporation is a nonprofit corporation organized for the followingŠ educational purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue CodeŠ To engage primarily in improving the critical thinking skills, math skills, and social interaction skills of children by teaching them duplicate bridge and by training instructors to teach them; to provide a facility for training, teaching and playing bridge; and to engage in any lawful act or activities related to the foregoing which are consistent with the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the Code.`
In March of 2008, the Internal Revenue Service informed us that they had granted our application for tax exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We are classified as a public educational charity and contributions to HBC are eligible for deduction as charitable contributions on income or estate tax returns.
Gifts from supporters in 2008 were used to assist in tutoring and sending eleven of Hawaii`s middle school students to compete in the first ever Youth North American Bridge Championship, held in Atlanta this past summer. It was a great experience for the students and each of them earned master points.
In January, 2009, HBC sponsored an all day session for individuals wishing to obtain a Bridge Teacher Accreditation Certificate. With support from HBC, the normal $125 fee was reduced to $50 per person. Karol Monroe, from Audrey Grant`s Better Bridge Team, led the session and 18 participants earned their teacher`s certificate.
Programs under way at this time include Saturday afternoon Bridge lessons at the Oahu Veterans Center (OVC) for middle school students, other teenagers from the surrounding area and some interested adults. The management of OVC has been very supportive and we have enjoyed using this first class facility.
In addition to its mission to educate both youth and adults in the game of Bridge, HBC plans to secure a location for a Bridge Center, where individuals of all ages can learn the game of Bridge, interested players can become teachers and all who wish can have a place to play the game. That fund will be maintained separately from our operational funds and invested conservatively until adequate funds are in hand to obtain the appropriate facility. Tax deductible gifts can be made while the contributor is alive or through a provision in a will at their passing.
We appreciate your past financial support and hope that you will consider making the Hawaii Bridge Center one of your favorite charities for frequent contributions.
