A.
Law 22.B.1 End
of the Auction
LAW 22 now defines the time between the end of the auction
and the end of the auction period as the clarification period. (This is the
time between the last `PASS` in the auction and before the opening lead is made
and faced.)
COMMENT by AM: This added statement to Law 22
apparently provides the opportunity for all players to ask for clarification of
the bids made during the auction prior to the opening lead. HOWEVER, a player may NOT ask a
question solely for partner`s benefit. This is a change from the Walt `rule`
that only the opening leader can ask questions about the auctions prior to the
opening lead. However, if your
partner asks a question at his turn to call or play, you many not ask a
supplementary question until it is your turn to call or play.
This law has two significant changes:
1. There is a return to the one and two trick rectification of the 1973 Laws; i.e.if the revoking player won the trick on which the revoke happened and the offending side won another subsequent trick, the non-offending side gets two tricks. If the revoking player does not win the revoke trick and the revoking side wins some subsequent trick, the non-offending side gets one trick. However, part C of the law requires the director to restore equity on deals where the non-offending side would have won ore tricks without the revoke, even after taking into account the additional trick or tricks awarded in accordance with part A of this law.
2. When each side has revoked,
there is no rectification for either revoke. However, the director is required, under part C, to adjust
the result to that result that was most likely had neither revoke occurred.
